Following on from the past two AWC exhibition in 2013 and 2015, which raised over $400,000 for the important work of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, this year, a third exhibition will celebrate the AWC Newhaven property in the Northern Territory. This important sanctuary covers 262, 000 hectares and is located near the intersection of three central Australian bioregions. The sanctuary protects 27 mammal species, over 170 bird species and over 80 reptile species.
In May of 2017, the AWC, in conjunction with Lea and Bill Ferris and Defiance Gallery, organised for six leading Australian artists - painters Ann Thomson, Joe Furlonger, Kevin Lincoln, Dan Kyle, sculpture Paul Hopmeier and photographer and filmmaker Jason Capobianco, to travel to Newhaven. The artists spent a week exploring the 262, 000 hectares of protected wilderness working closely with scientists from the AWC and Arid Recovery on the Feral-proof fence.
AWC is a registered not for profit organisation whose mission is the effective conservation of all Australian animals and their habitats. AWC manages 23 sanctuaries covering over three million hectares across Australia, with 80% of their staff working on the ground to implement conservation programs such as fire management and carry out strategic scientific research to help turn back the tide of extinction.
The exhibition is a celebration of the Australian landscape and of our continued attempts to see our land from the perspectives of both the artists and the scientist.
