Lives and works Brisbane (Meanjin)
Chris Gaynor is a Cypriot-Australian painter and poet based between Meanjin (Brisbane) and Athens.
Gaynor develops an expressive, yet formally conscious image that remains open and enigmatic. He favours the honest gesture and direct application of paint — an action that walks the line between intention and abandon. His titles, often literary in reference, serve as keys for the viewer to enter into the poetics of the painting. Gaynor is interested in the relationship between the Word and the Image — informed by his Orthodox spirituality — both being valued as equal forms of articulation.
In 2021 Gaynor studied at Queensland College of the Arts. During this time he met the senior Australian abstractionist Leonard Brown, a relationship that has developed into an ongoing mentorship and close friendship.
He has been included in a number of significant group shows and has held solo exhibitions in Greece, Cyprus and Australia. Gaynor's work is held in private collections across Europe, North America, South East Asia and Australia.
