Established in 1995 by Founding Director Campbell Robertson-Swann, Defiance Gallery has become one of Australia's leading contemporary art galleries, recognised for its commitment to artistic excellence and a rigorous exhibition program. Over three decades, the gallery has earned the respect of artists, curators and collectors both nationally and internationally.
Long recognised as a leading advocate for sculpture, Defiance Gallery represents a roster of artists working across sculpture, painting and expanded contemporary practice. Alongside established and emerging artists, the gallery stewards the estates of significant Australian figures, including Roy Jackson and Peter Powditch, ensuring their work remains an active part of contemporary cultural discourse.
Defiance Gallery's exhibition program brings together solo presentations, curated projects and major exhibitions that celebrate experimentation and artistic excellence. Signature initiatives include the Defiance Award for painters and the biennial Size Is Not Everything, one of Australia's longest-running exhibitions dedicated to small-scale sculpture. Through its program, the gallery continues to shape conversations around contemporary art while fostering enduring relationships between artists, institutions and collectors.
