Meagan Jacobs
Born Manly, Australia
Lives & Works Ampilatwatja (Alyawarre)
After 30 years living on the NSW South Coast, time spent living and working in remote aboriginal communities has left a deep imprint on Jacobs' work. The constraints of traditional landscape painting have been replaced with a more direct response to her environment.
The subtlety and depth of her colour palette and her commitment to landscape are evident in her work. It is meditative, both tightly knit and unpredictably expansive.
“It’s strange” Jacobs admits “to fit the whole of the desert into the small square of a painting. Looking out into this amazing vista, how do you compress it? I guess my discipline is to distil. What is physically available becomes a template for the infinite.”
Meagan Jacobs has exhibited widely throughout Australia and in addition to her own practice, works closely with the Artists of Ampilatwatja community, 325km north east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in the Northern Territory.
