Lives & Works Thirroul (Tharawal)

Ivor Fabok is a graduate of Fine Art (painting) from the City Art Institute, Sydney and has an MFA (drawing & sculpture) from the National Art School in Sydney, where he also taught Sculpture, Drawing and Painting for over three decades.

He began exhibiting sculpture in 1982 and his work has been commissioned for the American Express building, Sydney and the Hyatt Coolum, Queensland.

His local environment along with music and literature inform his perspectives and approach to a play between 3D and 2D forms.

“Listening to sound works, modern classical music and in particular avant-garde jazz has always been inspirational to me in terms of visual expression, its lyricism and ability to suggest form underpin compositional structure that invite you to improvise upon. It’s an intuitive process, you build, destroy and recompose constantly, establishing a rhythmic interplay, a call and response dialogue that’s similar to what I imagine improvising musicians refer to as being in the ‘zone’. For a work to succeed the artist must give over to the evolving internal logic of the work at hand.”

In addition to an active studio practice and regular solo and group, Fabok currently teaches interdiciplinary art classes at the Clifton School of Arts. His work is included in the Wollongong Art Gallery permanent collection as well as many private collections.
